In the 1930s, Soviet culture was tightly controlled by the Stalinist regime, with architecture, literature, and cinema serving as key vehicles for promoting socialist ideals and glorifying Joseph Stalin. Architecture saw the rise of Socialist Classicism, characterized by grand, neoclassical designs in public buildings like the Moscow Metro, which showcased the state’s power and commitment to modernization. Literature was dominated by socialist realism, demanding works that depicted the triumphs of socialism and heroic proletarian figures, with strict censorship silencing dissenting voices and punishing nonconformist writers during the Great Purge.
